David Letterman Scandal

The man accused of extorting US talk show king David Letterman for $1.2million allegedly took revenge after seeing his girlfriend kiss the TV star outside their home.

Robert Halderman split from Stephanie Birkitt soon after - but is said to have then vowed to make married Letterman "miserable" by revealing his affair unless the 62-year-old paid him the huge sum. An insider on Letterman's show - where Birkitt worked as his assistant - said Halderman's world "was falling apart".

The TV producer was arrested in Manhattan last week just hours before Letterman revealed details of his affair and the alleged extortion plot on his show.
